...to transmit 'wireless' radio signals, outside the laboratory. A day
after the death of Queen Victoria, 23 January 1901, G Marconi successfully
transmitted radio signals over 300 km between the Isle of Wight and
Cornwall, thus confronting the opinion of the Victorian mathematicians that
radio waves would not travel beyond the horizon line due to Earth's
curvature...Proof of concept allowed Marconi to sign a contract for the
supply of radio systems to the Royal Navy (a precursor to the start up or
technology transfer?). This work led to a Nobel Prize and international
fame for Marconi. Sir Ambrose Fleming, the founder of our dept, worked
with Marconi on some of the transmitter designs and thus, those of us at
UCL working on the research on the propagation of electromagnetic radiation
in various media can inspiration from this!

Just wanted to share this with you!
