AMSAT NEWS SERVICE
ANS 111

ANS is a free, weekly, news and information service of AMSAT North
America, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation. ANS reports on the
activities of a worldwide group of Amateur Radio operators who share an
active interest in designing, building, launching and communicating
through analog and digital Amateur Radio satellites.

ANS is pleased to announce the 20th Space Symposium and AMSAT-NA
Annual Meeting. The conference is scheduled for November 7-11, 2002 in
Fort Worth, Texas, and will chronicle recent and future Amateur Radio
satellite technology developments, including an Electronic Surplus Stores
tour on November 7th; a Field Operations breakfast and a tour of the
Lockheed Martin Aerospace Company on November 10th; and the
AMSAT-NA Board of Directors Meeting November 10th (AMSAT members
are welcome to attend the BOD meeting. [The 2002 event chairman is

This ANS bulletin set is dedicated to the memory of Earl Smith, W5EZ,
a longtime Johnson Space Center Amateur Radio Club member who
died recently of an apparent heart attack. W5EZ currently served as the
club librarian and will be missed by his many JSC club members. [ANS

ANS salutes Shintaro Uda, co-inventor (with Hidetsugu Yagi) of the
Yagi-Uda antenna, the most popular antenna design used by hams
around the world. Uda is among the inaugural group of 50 inductees

ADVANCED DATA COMMUNICATIONS

AMSAT-NA's Rick Hambly, W2GPS, recently reminded satellite
operators that AMSAT-NA is in the process of developing two new
satellites; OSCAR-Echo is being designed to be a LEO EasySat with
voice and data capabilities; and Eagle, which is going to be an elliptical
bird with linear transponders.

In addition to the standard compliment of transponders, there is room on
both satellites for optional payloads.

One such payload under consideration is a transponder to support the
development of ADCARS - Advanced Data Communications for the
Amateur Radio Service. This project involves the use of a very high
speed wideband data communications channel to simultaneously carry
multiple voice, data, and video. The characteristics of the channel would
be such that link margins and quality of service will be significantly
improved over conventional techniques.

The major effort to achieve these goals will be associated with the
development of ground station hardware and software. New transmitter,
receiver and antenna designs will also be needed. Other technology
issues will include modulation, coding, interleaving, and channel access
methods.

There are four areas of design and development that are needed to put
such a payload on the new satellites. They include transmitter design,
receiver design, CPU design, and payload integration.

On Friday, maps to the AMSAT Banquet will be available at the booth.

The annual AMSAT-NA Banquet will be held at Eleanor's Amber Rose
in north Dayton. Dinner will be served following the presentation by Bob
Bruninga, WB4APR. Bob will speak on APRS and the U.S. Naval
Academy PCSat satellite.

The AMSAT Forum will be held in Room-1 beginning at 08:15.

ATLANTIS ISS MISSION UPDATE

The mission of outfitting the newest components of the International
Space Station continued this past week and included the mission's third
and forth spacewalks. Shuttle astronauts Steve Smith and Rex Walheim
continued installation work on the S-Zero Truss, now permanently
attached to the station's U.S. laboratory - Destiny. During the 6?-hour
spacewalk, Smith worked from a platform on the station arm, operated
by Mission Specialist Ellen Ochoa and Flight Engineer Dan Bursch. In
addition, Shuttle astronauts Jerry Ross and Lee Morin accomplished the
fourth and final spacewalk of the STS-110 mission, with many of their
tasks focusing on helping future spacewalkers.

Ross, N5SCW, set a personal best, making his 9th spacewalk during
his seven orbital flights. The retired Air Force Colonel set a record for
the greatest number of flights and spacewalks by an astronaut or
cosmonaut!

Prior to his current flight, N5SCW had logged 1,133 hours in space.

The first space railroad car received its first trial run last Monday,
highballing along 26 feet of the track atop the ISS S-Zero (S0) Truss at a
maximum speed of one inch per second, or 100 yards an hour.

The 10 crewmembers also participated in a news conference with media
representatives at NASA centers in Florida and Houston and at Mission
Control Moscow. The event was also carried live on NASA television.

In addition to the news conference,  astronaut Dan Bursch talked to an
excited group of students at the Quogue School in Quogue, New York.
A crowd of 123 fellow students and about 100 parents witnessed the
Earth-to-space interview in the school auditorium. This was followed by
astronaut Carl Walz being interviewed by youngsters at the Caribbean
Preparatory School in Puerto Rico. Both contacts with NA1SS were
arranged through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) program.

On Thursday Atlantis left the International Space Station after a
successful mission to bring the centerpiece of the station's main truss to
the orbiting laboratory and four successful spacewalks to connect and
outfit it.

In a related event, the first screening of the Space Station 3D IMAX film
took place here on Earth, and is reported to be "breathtaking" by ARISS
members. In the movie ham astronaut Bill Shepherd talks to students in
the Texas using ARISS equipment. According to ARISS Program
Manager Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, "it is the closest way that an individual
could experience space without going to it themselves. It was
spectacular from the perspective that you really felt like you were there."

** The exploration of the outer solar system began in the early 1970s
with the launch of Pioneers 10 and 11. Now, 30 years later, one final
world remains to be explored - Pluto, its moon Charon and their

** The XW1HS team made over 9,000 QSOs, including 466 on RTTY
and 100 contacts on AO-40. The operation ended on April 19th.

** Pakistan's first communications satellite will be launched by the
end of this year, the Federal Minister for Science and Technology

** The March issue of the Monitoring System Newsletter talked about
an unidentified shortwave broadcast, possibly from Asia, that is
being heard in South America on 18090 kHz. More observations are
required to identify the broadcast. -IARU

** The brightest comet since 1997's Hale-Bopp is currently gracing
the western skies of North America. Comet Ikeya-Zhang was
discovered in February by two amateur astronomers in Japan and

** The 2001 AMSAT Symposium awards included a presentation to
Mirek Kasal, OK2AQK, for his generous contribution of time and effort
during the Phase 3D launch campaign. His willingness to sacrifice
personal time for this endeavor is greatly appreciated by hams the

** Global statistics continue to highlight an increasing number of people
who are affected by weather and climate related disasters while records
show a corresponding increase in the number of such hazards. This is

** Reinhard, DJ1KM, reports the AMSAT-DL web page currently has
AO-40 pass prediction lists (through early June) for Dayton, New York

** Barry, VA3BJD, has agreed to become the 'Assistant to the President',

** Meteor scatter enthusiasts now have an operating event to call their
own - the 2002 North American Meteor Scatter Rally. The event is
aimed at promoting the use of VHF/UHF meteor-scatter communication
techniques. Set for April 27 through May 5 --to take advantage of the Eta
Aquarids meteor shower- the idea is to work as many stations as
possible in as many grids as possible. -ARRL Letter

** The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has named
Steve Dimse, K4HG, of Tucson Amateur Packet Radio, as recipient of
one of its Environmental Hero Awards for the year 2002.  Dimse, of
Cudjoe Key, Florida is being honored for his volunteer efforts in real-time

connected to the S-2 transmitter passband downlink via the Matrix
switch. Some 58 DXCC countries were QRV on AO-40 in 2001.

Ground stations capturing telemetry from AO-40 are asked to send a
copy of the data to the AO-40 archive at: ao40-archive@amsat.org.

RADIO SPORT RS-21
Downlink 	145.825 and 435.335 MHz CW/FSK.
Launched: remotely launched on March 20, 2002 from a Russian
Progress M-1-7 launcher. Status: operational

Radio Sport 21, is also known as the Kolibri-2000 satellite. The
satellite's formal name is the Russian-Australian Scientific and
Educational Microsatellite Kolibri-2000. RS-21 will send down telemetry
data and digitally recorded voice messages. RS-21 is in a circular orbit
just over 200 miles above the Earth.

Keith, N4ZQ, reports "after a long absence of not being heard from,
the RS-21 signal returned to 70-cm, sending it's usual 16 channels of
telemetry." Sil, ZL2CIA, and Jack, K2BMI, also report reception.

Launched: September 26, 1993 by an Ariane launcher from Kourou,
French Guiana. Status: Operational, mode J.

AO-27 control operator Michael Wyrick, N3UC (former N4USI), reports
AO-27 has been turn off to condition the batteries. Earlier this month, the
control operators noticed that AO-27's batteries had become very low
and was causing the transmitter to turn off early during the passes. The
on-board software was turning the transmitters off to keep the batteries
from becoming too low to keep the CPU running.

Currently, AO-27's Amateur Radio 'bent-pipe' transmitter is off in hopes
of getting enough charge to the batteries. At that time, the transmitter
will resume normal FM repeater operation. At times the control stations
will turn the transmitter on to collect 1200-baud AFSK telemetry.

AO-27 uses a method called Timed Eclipse Power Regulation (TEPR) to
regulate the on-board batteries. In simple terms, TEPR times how long
the satellite has been in an eclipse (or in the sun) and decides what
subsystems to turn on or off. The AO-27 pages on the AMSAT-NA web

Kyle, K0KN, reports several contacts via SO-41.

One of two ham satellites from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia built by
the Space Research Institute at the King Abdulaziz City for Science and
Technology.

The spacecraft is operating in Mode-J, currently configured as an
analog FM voice repeater. The spacecraft will operate in this mode
intermittently, as power and spacecraft experiments permit.

SO-41's downlink RF power is 1-watt with left-hand circular polarization.
The uplink antenna (located on top of the spacecraft) is linear in
polarization.

UVC (Under Voltage Controller) now is regulating the transponder. The
controller monitors battery voltage and tries to protect the batteries from
over discharge.

PCSat is a 1200-baud APRS digipeater designed for use by
stations using hand-held or mobile transceivers. Downlinks feed a
central web site < http://pcsat.aprs.org >. The APRS-equipped
PCSat was built by midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy
under the guidance of Bob Bruninga, WB4APR.

PCSat has made it through one orbit without a reset, thus the daytime
only restrictions have been removed. Normal operation has resumed.

TiungSat-1 is Malaysia's first micro-satellite and in addition to
commercial land and weather imaging payloads offers FM and FSK
Amateur Radio communication.

TiungSat-1, named after the mynah bird of Malaysia, was developed as
a collaborative effort between the Malaysian government and Surrey
Satellite Technology Ltd.

Launched: March 1, 1984 by a Delta-Thor rocket from Vandenberg Air
Force Base in California. Status: Operational

During the past year OSCAR-11 has operated continuously on both
VHF and S band, with very little ground control needed. During the period
08-March 08-April 2002, consistent signals have been received from the
145.826 MHz beacon. The internal temperatures have decreased slightly.
They are now 3.2C and 1.6C for battery and telemetry electronics
respectively. The battery voltage observed during daylight passes has
also decreased slightly. The average value observed was 13.6 with a
range of 13.3 to 13.9 volts. The spin period has drifted between 233
and 315 seconds. The attitude is controlled solely by the gravity boom
gradient.

North America) since late July 2001. In addition, Sangat, 9M2SS,
reports he has not copied UO-36 since July 30, 2001.

ProcMail V2.00G has been released by G7UPN. This software permits
the processing of image files from TO-31. It has been posted to the
AMSAT-NA FTP site at the following URL:

Many of the high-resolution color images transmitted by TMSAT are
compressed using a UoSAT compression format. This format is
supported by the VK5HI CCD display program.

When/if operational, SaudiSat-1B will operate as 9600-baud digital
store-and-forward systems as well analog FM repeater mode capability.
One of two new ham satellites from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia built by
the Space Research Institute at the King Abdulaziz City for Science and
Technology.

SUNSAT SO-35
Launched: February 23, 1999 by a Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air
Force Base in California. Status: Non-operational

The SunSat team released the following statement, dated
February 1, 2001:

We regret to announce that the last communication with SunSat from our
ground station at the Electronic Systems Laboratory at Stellenbosch
University took place recently. We are certain, after having performed
several tests since the last contact, that an irreversible, physical failure
has occurred on the satellite. It is therefore unlikely that we will have
any further contact with SunSat, apart from the occasional visual sighting
by telescope!

When it was operational the SunSat package included 1200 and 9600
baud digital store-and-forward capability and a voice 'parrot' repeater
system in addition to Mode B/J operation with two VHF and two UHF
transmit-receive systems.

TECHSAT-1B GO-32
Downlink           435.225 MHz using HDLC telemetry
Launched: July 10, 1998 by a Russian Zenit rocket from the Baikonur
Cosmodrome. Status: Semi-operational.

Last reported, the satellite does transmit a 9600-baud burst every 30
seconds (the GO-32 beacon sends one short telemetry status
transmission of 44 bytes) and upon request the complete telemetry
buffer.

PANSAT PO-34
Uplink/downlink frequency (listed on the PanSat web site) 436.500 MHz
Launched: October 30, 1998 by the Shuttle Discovery. Status: Unknown

The satellite is not available for general uplink transmissions.

The Naval Postgraduate School developed PanSat. At the time of
launch, PanSat spread-spectrum digital transponders were to
be available to Amateur Radio operators along with software to utilize
this technology.

The satellite is still operating, however, the spread spectrum packet radio
portion never took place. The spacecraft is now beyond it's initial 2-year
mission life, but telemetry records are still being downloaded.

WO-18 was last reported to be in MBL mode after a software crash.

SEDSAT-1 SO-33

Launched: October 24, 1998 by a Delta 2 rocket from Cape Canaveral,
Florida. Status: Semi-operational.

The satellite is not currently available for uplink transmissions and the
image and transponder recovery efforts have been unsuccessful.

SedSat-1 signifies Students for the Exploration and Development of
Space (satellite number one).

SedSat-1 has downlinked months worth of telemetry data on the
performance of its electrical power system parameters. The Nickel
Metal Hydride batteries on the spacecraft were experimental and
experienced some abuse due to a power negative situation. This
information has provided NASA with useful information. With the
exception of the imaging system and the use of the transponders,
SedSat-1 has been judged a success.
