2008 AMSAT Space Symposium Begins This Week

The 2008 Harry Yoneda JA1ANG AMSAT Space Symposium and Annual Meeting
is right on schedule for October 24-26, 2008. 

Highlights of the weekend include:

+ Board of Director's Meeting on October 23 - 24.

+ AMSAT-NA General Membership Meeting on Saturday, October 25 from 
  10-12 AM Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4). The AMSAT General Meeting 
  will be broadcast on EchoLink AMSAT Conference, node 101377. Users
  may ask questions via the chat link.

+ AMSAT Annual Banquet will be held on Saturday evening October 25.  
  The banquet speaker is Daniel Schultz, N8FQV who will describe the
  The Hubble Space Telescope Repair Mission.

+ AMSAT's Field Operations Breakfast will be held on Sunday morning, 
  October 26.

+ A free Sunday morning workshop 'Introduction to Digital Signal 
  Processing' presented by Phil Harman, VK6APH.

+ The grand prize to be given away at the Banquet this year is an 
  ICOM IC-910.

Richard Garriott Amateur Radio Operations Commence From ISS

ARISS International Chairman, and AMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight 
Programs, Frank Bauer, KA3HDO reported Richard Garriott is now on-
orbit after a successful launch.  The Soyuz crew has completed docking 
with the ISS as of October 14.  All are aboard the ISS.

Richard has commenced amateur radio activity from the ISS using FM 
phone, Slow-Scan Television (SSTV), and packet operations.  The ARISS 
team encourages hams to upload their ISS SSTV pictures on the ARISS 
SSTV Gallery. In addition, we are posting late breaking information 
and pictures on the ARISS SSTV blog.

There are links at the Gallery site to submit your SSTV pictures.  Also
included are helpful hints for SSTV operations during Richard Garriott's

Amateur stations around the world have reported hearing FM voice and
SSTV operation while the ISS crew is awake.  Packet operations are 
planned for operation during the crew sleep period (20:30-05:00 UTC).

Delfi-C3 in Telemetry Mode

Wouter Jan Ubbels PE4WJ, reports the Delfi-C3/DO-64 teama has 
successfully switched their Delfi-C3 satellite into basic mode. 

This means Delfi-C3 is currently transmitting 1200bit/s BPSK house-
keeping telemetry on the primary downlink frequency of 145.870MHz. 

In this mode, AX.25 frames containing housekeeping telemetry are 
transmitted approximately once every 4-5 secs, with the rest of the 
transmission being filled with idle flags. 

The Delfi team encourages everyone to receive, decode and forward 
telemetry using the RASCAL software as previously done during the 
first three months of science mission. The RASCAL telemetry decoding
software can be downloaded at: http://www.delfic3.nl/rascal

At this moment, the Delfi team does not know how long the satellite 
will be in this mode, but they are planning on a couple of weeks of
telemetry operations. You can stay informed on their mission opera-

AMSAT Receives CFC Certification for 2008

The Office of Combined Federal Campaign Operations has approved 
AMSAT-NA for participation in the 2008 CFC.  The CFC, or Combined 
Federal Campaign, is the U.S. Government equivalent of the United 
Way in the private sector. The campaign affords all US Government 
employees the opportunity to make donations from their regular 
paychecks to CFC approved Charities. 

This stamp of approval means that AMSAT has met the strict standards 
set by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) assuring donors 
that our programs of work, financial, and operations meet the standards 
for eligible volunteer agencies.

Those AMSAT supporters who which to make payroll contributions should

WinAPRS Writer Hurt in Balloon Crash

ANS received news via Amateur Radio Newsline that a ham known to
many in AMSAT has been critically injured in a hot air balloon 
crash at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on Friday, 
October 10th. Another passenger aboard the ballon was killed in 
the crash.

Killed in the crash was Stephen Lachendro, of Butler, Pennsylvania.  
Keith Sproul, WU2Z, was critically injured in the accident when the 
'Wings of Wind' balloon hit powerlines near the festival grounds 
just North of the city.

According to news reports, there were gusty winds as the two balloon-
ists were trying to land.  From pictures taken by attendees, it 
appears as if the basket carrying the men caught fire after hitting 
the power lines, separated from the balloon envelope and fell to the 
ground.  

First responders reported that Lachendro was found lying on the side 
of a ditch after falling 45 feet to his death.  Sproul who was report-
edly piloting the balloon jumped some 60 feet from the burning gondola. 
WU2Z was unconscious when he was found and was flown by helicopter to 
a local hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.  Reports 
say that he suffered a broken leg and hip, punctured lungs and burns 
to his face.

Keith Sproul is the twin brother Mark Sproul, KB2ICI. The two are best 
known in ham radio circles as the co-authors of the popular WinAPRS, 
MacAPRS and X-APRS  APRS is the multi-faceted position reporting 
system originally developed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR.  It allows the 
monitoring of real time geographical information such as the position 
of vehicles, the status of weather, radio direction finding and much 
more.

According to a National Guard spokesman at the scene, the National 
Transportation Safety Board will investigate this latest crash.
