AO-51 Off-Air

Sometime on Sunday, 26 June 2005, there was a software reset on AO-51.
Getting a memory download of each program that was running on the
satellite at the time has been completed. The Software Group will study
this data to debug the programs. This will take a number of days to
accomplish. We are working on this as fast as possible to get Echo back
up and running.

Update 2 July from the AO-51 Web Site:

The current plan is to begin the software reloading Saturday evening.
When completed the satellite will be placed in the normal V/U FM
repeater and 9k6 digital mode.

Uplink: 145.920 mhz FM, 67 hz PL Tone
Downlink 435.300 mhz FM
9k6 Digital, V/U, PBP BBS (Pacsat Broadcast Protocol BBS)

ARISS Status

1.Texan School Contact Successful

Students attending the Hockaday Schools summer program in Dallas, Texas
had the opportunity to speak to John Phillips, KE5DRY, on Monday, June
20. An audience of 300 students, teachers and parents gathered and
watched as twelve children asked 22 questions of the astronaut. There 
was
limited media coverage, but those attending were thrilled with the 
event!

2.Planned School Contacts

The Mayborn Museum at Baylor University in Waco, Texas was scheduled for
a contact via the telebridge station, WH6PN, in Hawaii on Monday, June 
27
at 16:05 UTC.

Yokohama Elementary School in Kochi, Japan has been scheduled for a 
contact on Monday, July 4 at 09:20 UTC.

3.ARRL Article on Canadian, Swiss School Contacts

Students from Zurich International School in Horgen, Switzerland and
children attending Ecole de la Source, in Mascouche, Quebec, Canada,
experienced ARISS contacts with John Phillips, KE5DRY, on June 10 and 
17,
respectively.  ARRL ran a web story entitled, "International Students,
Quebec Primary Schoolers Quiz Astronaut via Ham Radio."

4.ARISS CDs Delivered

The SuitSat Educational Project CDs and the updated QRZ callsign 
database
CD were transferred to Alexander Poleschuk. Mr. Poleschuk will deliver
them to Energia this week.

5.Expedition 10 Crew Debrief Scheduled

The ARISS-U.S. team has been scheduled for a crew debrief with Leroy
Chiao, KE5BRW. The Expedition 10 debrief is planned for Tuesday, June 28
at 4:15 pm ET.

6.ARISS International Meeting Held

The monthly ARISS International Teleconference was held on Tuesday, June
21.  Items of discussion included preparation for the ARISS 
International
Meeting to be held in the U.K. August 1 / 2, and the funding which was
obtained for the ARISS S-Band and L-Band antennas on the Columbus 
Module.
Also covered were the shipment of SSTV and SuitSat hardware, and the
status of the SuitSat Educational Project. The next ARISS International
Teleconference will be held on Tuesday, July 19.

Symposium Registration Now Online

on-line.
The Symposium will be held October 7-9 at the Holiday Inn Holidome in

In addition to downloading the registration form, for the first time
attendees can now register online through the AMSAT store. Registration

STSTLE List Operational Again

The "STSTLE" is re-mobilizing in anticipation of the Space Shuttle 
return
to flight.  Because of the long hiatus following the Columbia tragedy,
the team is re-constituting the mailing list from scratch.

As in the past, the Space Shuttle orbital data will be posted on the
AMSAT Web site.  However, those wishing to receive AMSAT and TLE
Keplerian data directly by e-mail will need to re-subscribe to the
mailing list.

As in the past, we shall endeavor to provide several updates daily as
well as provide updates to cover all thrust events.

AMSAT member Kevin Schuchmann, WA6FWF, offered a membership challenge on
June 27, 2005.  Kevin wrote, "I will match the $44 membership fee for
every non-member on the AMSAT-BB listserv that joins in the next two
weeks up to $1000 dollars.  If you have been sitting on the fence please
look at what some of the BOD's have been doing for you to use the
satellites that you have now like ECHO and join AMSAT knowing that your
membership fee will be matched and will go to AMSAT's latest project
EAGLE".

Gunther Meisse, W8GSM, AMSAT Treasurer, replied to Kevin, "Thank you for
your generous offer. It is positive efforts like yours that will make a
difference!!!

This was followed a day later by this message (Ed.)

"As I am sure you saw on the -bb yesterday, we have a great offer going
for the next two weeks with a generous member offering to match the new
member sign-up dues up to $1,000.00. Well, the offer gets even better

One Year Anniversary of Echo

June 29th will mark the 1-year anniversary of the Launch of Echo.  On
June 29, 2004, Echo, now AO-51, was launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan,
on top of a Dnepr launch vehicle.  Echo was one of 8 satellites which
were placed into Sun Synchronous Orbit during this launch.  After
approximately a month of commissioning and testing, the satellite was
placed into amateur radio service.

Much more information about the history of Echo is available in Gould
Smith's (WA4SXM) book, "AO-51 Development, Operations, and
Specifications", available from Amsat-NA.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the first year of Echo's in-orbit life, the
wide variety of modes and experiments that have been operated to date on
the satellite, and are looking forward to many more opportunities with
Echo in the years ahead.  If you use and enjoy Echo please consider
joining Amsat-NA, or your Countrys Amsat organization.  It is one
way that we can continue to do what we enjoy; make contacts via
Amateur Radio Satellites.
