Bei Nebel und Ebbe auf einer Sandbank - NORAD-Keps # 29

AO-40 is currently like a ship on a sandbank at low-tide in the fog.
In the fog because due to the high solar-angle (max. 77°) the
sun-sensors temporarily cannot see much. At low-tide because the
increasing solar-angle leads to less illumination (min. 23 %) and
less energy produced. And on a sandbank because the satellite cannot
be maneuvered out of this misery situation easily. The announced
de-spinner-routine is a big hope. This routine should work without
sun-sensor data and will use measurements from the solar-panels as
attitude indicator. Intensive works on this brand new software are
taking place.

Even if this routine doesn't work immediately, there is no reason to
panic. Fog and low-tide will disappear with further seasonal
sun-movements around the spacecraft. In April the sensors will see
the sun again, and active attitude control can be restarted. After
lowering spin and improving sun-angle and antenna pointing all
further tests (V-, U-TX, ATOS, wheels etc) can be done.

Command stations G3RUH and W4SM made a long-term prediction of
AO-40's new orbit. Even after last year's accident and the resulting
decrease of perigee AO-40's orbit will be stable though perigee will
oscillate several hundred kilometers (see graphics below).
