AMSAT-DL Announces IARU coordinated frequencies for P4-A, Es'hail-2<br>

Es'hail-2 is a commercial geostationary broadcasting satellite<br>
which will also provide the first amateur radio Phase 4 trans-<br>
ponders. The satellite will be positioned at 26 degrees east.<br>
<br>
Es'hail-2 will carry two transponders operating in the 2400 MHz<br>
and 10450 MHz bands. A 250kHz bandwidth linear transponder<br>
intended for conventional analogue operations and an 8 MHz<br>
bandwidth transponder for experimental digital modulation<br>
schemes and DVB amateur television.<br>

Launch Announced For Es’hail-2 Carrying Ham Radio Transponders<br>
<br>
Es’hailSat has tweeted their geostationary satellite Es’hail-2 is<br>
expected to be launched by SpaceX in the 4th quarter of 2018.<br>
<br>
Qatar’s Es’hail-2 satellite will provide the first amateur radio<br>
geostationary communications and is capable of linking amateurs from<br>
Brazil to Thailand.<br>
<br>
Es’hail-2 will carry two “Phase 4” amateur radio transponders<br>

BIRDS-2 deploy from ISS on 10th Aug<br>
<br>
JAXA announced BIRDS-2 three CubeSats BHUTAN-1, MAYA-1 and UiTMSat-1<br>
deploy from ISS at 10th August.<br>
<br>
They will transmit 30 minutes after deployment. Initial mode looks CW<br>
on 70cm. They use same frequency 437.375MHz and transmit in the order<br>
of BHUTAN-1, MAYA-1 and UiTMSat-1.<br>
<br>
BIRDS-2 CubeSats has also APRS digipeater on 145.825MHz.<br>

If you have missed APRS and packet radio from ISS (as ARISS has),<br>
you'll be happy to hear that a replacement system is on its way. When<br>
the packet module aboard ISS died in late 2017, the ARISS hardware<br>
team was heavily involved in design and safety certification of the<br>
new Interoperable Radio System (IORS).  After basic troubleshooting<br>
and a few attempts to revive the failed module, we decided to<br>
dedicate our time to IORS and get it - with its packet and other<br>
capabilities - aboard ISS as soon as possible.<br>
<br>
Early this year, thermal testing of the first flight-identical IORS<br>
power supply showed that some changes to air flow were needed. This<br>
change looked likely to delay our expected IORS deployment from late<br>
2018 to early 2019.<br>
<br>
With some newly available time, the hardware team was able to dig up<br>
an original duplicate of the packet module, replace its battery, and<br>
test the module to verify that it still works.  Fortunately, NASA has<br>
approved flight of this identical unit with minimal paperwork, so we<br>
are asking to be on the manifest for supply mission 71P (a Progress<br>
spacecraft).  Launch currently is scheduled for 31 October, with<br>
docking on 2 November.  Installation will depend on the crew’s busy<br>
schedule, but we expect packet will be operational again by the end<br>
of November 2018.<br>

To popularise Ham Radio in western India two events were conducted<br>

‘Ham Radio for GenX’ – Full day workshop with demo was conducted at<br>
LDRP College Gandhinagar (Gujarat – India) on 12th July 2018. More<br>
than 70 EC students + faculties participated in this awareness event.<br>
<br>
Program was inaugurated with kind presence of dignitaries from<br>
GIAR, LDRP, IEEE, ISRO & AMSAT-INDIA.<br>
<br>

etc. technology.<br>

Live demo of SSTV was conducted which was very much enjoyed by the<br>
students & faculties. VHF demo with mock drill was simulated by<br>
VU2EXP Rajesh, VU2JGI Jagdishbhai, VU3IKI Ke Ke, VU3EXP Sakshi & team.<br>
<br>
Ham Radio stuff were exhibited incl. VHF/UHF Rigs, PSU, Antennas,<br>
Digital Interfaces, Cables, SWR Meter, attenuator, FUNcube satellite<br>
model,<br>
QSL Cards, Awards, etc stuff was displayed for the knowledge of the<br>
students.<br>

We also got nice support from other fellow hams incl. VU3DVA<br>
Deepakbhai, VU3GLY Priyesh, VU3DSJ Dipakbhai, SWL Abhigna etc team.<br>

‘Ham Radio Practical Insight’ titled workshop was conducted at LD<br>
College Ahmedabad (Gujarat – India) on 13th July 2018 in afternoon<br>
session. More than 65 EC students + faculties participated.<br>

Dignitaries from IEEE, ISRO, LD & AMSAT-INDIA inaugurated the<br>
workshop. It was our great pleasure to have chief guest presence of<br>
Shri Rajeev Jyoti Sir (Dy. Director SAC – ISRO) & Chair (IEEE)<br>
Gujarat chapter in this Ham Radio Workshop.<br>

Rajesh Vagadia VU2EXP explained the latest technology/modes ham<br>
world uses & gave quick practical Demos for chief guest. Demo<br>
includes CW, Text, Image & Voice transmission/reception with simple<br>
VHF Radio sets. The simple experiment techniques used were described.<br>
Students were surprised to learn the potential of Amateur Radio &<br>
experts appreciate such public demos.<br>

We got nice support from team members VU3EXP Sakshi, VU2UTZ<br>
Dinyarji, VU3PMT Mahendrabhai, VU3GLY Priyesh, SWL Ketanbhai during<br>
demo & whole event.<br>

Thereafter detailed presentation was given on interesting ham<br>
events, digital communication, Satellite Communication, ARISS<br>
program, ASOC licencing procedure, APRS, SSTV witth RTL-SSDR etc.<br>
<br>
Session remain very interactive with lots of queries which were<br>
answered very well by VU2EXP. Also mini Ham Radio exhibition was<br>
keenly enjoyed by the audience.<br>

AMSAT Member Ruth Willet, KM4LAO Receives 2018 ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim<br>
Memorial Award<br>
<br>
Nineteen-year-old Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, of Cana, Virginia, was named<br>
as the recipient of the 2018 ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award by<br>
the ARRL Board of Directors at its July 20 – 21 meeting. The Hiram<br>
Percy Maxim Memorial Award is given annually by the Board to a radio<br>
amateur under the age of 21 whose accomplishments and contributions<br>
to both Amateur Radio and the local community are of an exemplary<br>
nature.<br>
<br>
Willet, who earned her Technician class license in June 2015 and<br>
upgraded to Extra in May 2016, was instrumental in re-establishing<br>
the Amateur Radio and Electronics Club (K8HPS) at Kettering<br>
University in Michigan, where she is a junior pursuing a double major<br>
in engineering physics and mechanical engineering while maintaining<br>
an A average. She alternates 11-week academic terms with 11-week co-<br>
op jobs at Textron Specialized Vehicles in Augusta, Georgia. Willet<br>
recently relocated to Virginia from Lawrenceville, Georgia, where she<br>
grew up.<br>
<br>
Willet is actively involved in recruiting and mentoring new<br>
licensees and in community awareness programs, including<br>
demonstrations during the August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse. She<br>
is on the air daily on HF, using SSB or CW and satellites. In<br>
addition to her membership in ARRL, Willet belongs to AMSAT and<br>
CWOps, as well as several other clubs. She enjoys HF contesting,<br>
participating in local club events, and chasing and roving to grids<br>
on Amateur Radio satellites. Willet and her mom Sharon, KM4TVU,<br>
participated in ARRL’s highly successful National Parks on the Air<br>
(NPOTA) event in 2016.<br>
<br>
Willet has written articles for numerous amateur radio news outlets,<br>
including QST. She earned the 2017 ARRL August QST Cover plaque for<br>
her article “The 2016 Youth DX Adventure to the Caribbean Island of<br>
Saba.” The article was based on her experience as a participant in<br>
the 2016 Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure trip to Saba.<br>
<br>
In May, Willet was presented with the Radio Club of America’s Young<br>
Achiever Award. Last spring, she was the keynote speaker at the 32nd<br>
annual SWODXA DX Dinner, held in conjunction with Hamvention®, where<br>
her topic was “Experiencing the Hobby of a Lifetime.” She also spoke<br>
at the 30th Hamvention Youth Forum in 2017 on “Plugging into Your<br>
Valuable Club Resources.”<br>
<br>
The Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award, which includes a cash award of<br>
$1,500 and an engraved plaque to the recipient, is intended to<br>
provide a tangible reward to those deserving young amateurs who<br>
contribute their time, skills, and energies daily through their<br>
commitment to Amateur Radio. As models for their peers, and<br>
inspirations to us all, these fine young people are highly visible<br>
boosters of Amateur Radio awareness.<br>

President's Club. Members of the President's Club, as sustaining<br>
donors to AMSAT Project Funds, will be eligible to receive addi-<br>
tional benefits. Application forms are available from the AMSAT<br>
Office.<br>

Primary and secondary school students are eligible for membership<br>
at one-half the standard yearly rate. Post-secondary school students<br>
enrolled in at least half time status shall be eligible for the stu-<br>
dent rate for a maximum of 6 post-secondary years in this status.<br>
