ANS is a free, weekly, news and information service of AMSAT North
America, The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation. ANS reports on the
activities of a worldwide group of Amateur Radio operators who share an
active interest in designing, building, launching and communicating
through analog and digital Amateur Radio satellites.

This weekend's annual Dayton Hamvention, May 19-21, gave AMSAT
volunteers an opportunity to showcase the exciting future of
Amateur Radio in Space.
Saturday morning's AMSAT forum presented news of present and
future projects including:
+ Phase 3-E Satellite Design and Development
+ Eagle Project Overview and Status
+ Software Defined Transponder, Internal Housekeeping Unit, Energy
Storage Experiments, and Structure Analysis
+ ARISS & SuitSat: Current Status & Future Opportunities
+ Introduction to AO-51 Operation with a Command Station Update
Dr. H. Paul Shuch, N6TX, Director of Education, hosted "Shared
Experiences of Using Satellites in the Classroom" at the AMSAT
Educator's Forum on Saturday.
Live satellite operating demonstrations were conducted by Drew,
KO4MA; Keith W5IU and other volunteers on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Contacts on both the FM and SSB satellites were demonstrated.
AMSAT demonstrated operation through the future Eagle and P3E SDX
(Software Defined Transponder). Bob McGwier, N4HY, Tom Clark, K3IO
and Howard Long, G5LVB had an SDX operating with live displays of
signals in the 50 kHz pass band.

Plan for AO-51 Kid's Day on June 17

Mike, KE4AZN, Amsat VP-Operations, and Echo Command Station says
AMSAT-NA, the AO-51 Command Team, and the AO-51 Operations Team will
sponsor Kid痴 Day on AO-51 on June 17, 2006.
The event is open to all kids, worldwide. We ask all amateur radio
stations to give this short time window to promote satellite operations
with kids, by actually showing a kid how to make contacts via AO-51,
providing a station to contact, or stepping aside to allow others to
make contacts with the kids.
During the event, please limit contacts to stations that are operating
with kids at the microphone. This should allow the kids to have a nice
QSO and pass some information. Kids can tell their name, age, who is
helping them operate on AO-51, where they live, and other information
about themselves.
AO-51 will be configured in the following mode during the event.
Please note we will use the normal AO-51 uplink frequency for the
event with the PL tone will be turned ON.
Uplink: 145.920 mhz FM voice 67 Hz PL Tone
Downlink: 435.300 mhz FM voice
The digital transponder on 435.150 will be turned off during the event.

Colloquium and Symposium Opportunities

AMSAT-UK has issued a call for papers and speakers for the 21st
Amsat-UK Colloquium which will be held at Surrey University, Guildford,
Surrey, U.K., from Friday 28 July to Sunday 30 July 2005.

AMSAT-NA invites speakers to submit and present papers dealing with the
science of Amateur Radio Satellites and associated technologies for the
AMSAT 2006 Space Symposium. The Symposium will be held 5 October to 11
October at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City, California, approximately
10km south of San Francisco International Airport.
Since the 2005 Symposium was cancelled due to hurricane damage caused by
hurricanes Katrina and Rita, speakers originally scheduled for the 2005
Symposium are invited to re-submit papers for the 2006 Symposium.

It is time to submit nominations for the upcoming open seats on the
AMSAT-NA Board of Directors. A nomination requires either one Member
Society or five current individual members to noninate an AMSAT member
for the position. A director serves for a period of two years. Three
directors' terms expire this year: Tom Clark, K3IO, Lou McFadin, W5DID,
and Paul Shuch, N6TX. Written nominations must be received at the AMSAT
office no later than 12 June 2006.

1. Yoneda-nishi Elementary School Contact Successful
On Thursday, May 11, students from Yoneda-nishi Elementary School in
Takasago, Hyogo prefecture, Japan spoke with astronaut Jeff Williams,
KD5TVQ. Thirteen students were able to ask 19 questions before the
ISS went over the horizon. Over two hundred students and parents wit-
nessed the event. The Earth to space contact was covered by one tele-
vision station and a newspaper.
2. Upcoming School Contact
Virgilio Primary School in Mestre, Venice, Italy is planning to have a
contact on Monday, May 22 at 13:28 UTC. This event will be integrated
into the school痴 geography and science curriculum, using poster drawing
and letter writing in the lesson plans. Media invited to cover the event
includes RAI national television, TG3 Regional, Televenezia and the
Gazzettino and La Nuova Venezia newspapers.
3. ARISS Annual Report 2005 on AMSAT Website

5. Student Ham Meets Astronauts
Pearl Mahar, KD7TAS, of Peoria, Arizona, was given the opportunity to meet
astronauts Andrew Thomas, KD5CHF, Charles Camarda, KC5ZSY, and James Kelly,
KC5ZSW at the area's Challenger Center. She was part of a team of five
students who designed a space station in the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace
Challenge.
