Current Status: 1999,05,11
AO-10 is now completely recovered from its most recent sleep period. There is
still some occasional deep QSB, but the conditions are at or close to optimal.
There is considerable activity on the transponder except near apogee.
Hopefully, more hams will use the near apogee time to experiment with PSK31.
This new technique is catching fire on the HF bands, and holds considerable
promise as a weak signal modality. Around apogee, the low levels of doppler
shift should help greatly. Also, don't forget CW as a QSO mode, especially
when signals are too weak for SSB.
AO-10's argument of perigee is increasing at rate of approximately 0.26 deg/day.
NORAD has re-acquired AO-10 for some time now. The Keplerian elements they have
been posting recently continue to check out very well with ranging measurements
I have made over the last several days.
Several of you have asked for my "prediction" regarding AO-10's signal quality
for field day. The short answer is that I don't know. However, field day is
at the end of June and it may be hoping for too much to expect AO-10 to stay
optimally illuminated for another 5 weeks. We'll see.
